hmmm disappointed! Chicken rice was dry and lacked flavour. Chicken itself was Maryland boiled, dont believe the hainanese chicken technique of cooking chicken to moist was used. and again no flavour. The sambal prawn! Alamak! It was a Canton can cook jar job! don’t bother. Go to Malaymas!

So I was very excited about finally visiting this Malaysian institution for hawker style food. From Penang specials and classic dishes they have a simple yet varied menu. I had to go for Nasi Lemak as my first dish from Straits and see how it rated. Unfortunately I was looking for a lot better but it was definitely not the best Nasi Lemak I have had. The Chicken Curry was pretty good, looking forward to trying the Beef Rendang next time and see what that is like. The egg, was half a boiled egg which had come straight out of the fridge/freezer as it was freezing on the plate. Cucumber — pretty hard to get this wrong, but they did well. 5 slices of cucumber and well presented. Mixed Pickled Vegetables — very average and I am not sure why this added to Nasi Lemak. Sambal with Anchovies — Yes they mixe the anchovies, peanuts and sambal in one but it seems the Sambal mix had sugar sprinkled on top which I found unnecessary otherwise the mix was quite nice. Overall it was ok, next time I think I will ask for different Sambal without added sugar and also Beef Rendang.

Straits Café in Doncaster Road is a favourite mealtime destination for Asian(mostly Malaysian and Singaporean) residents who live in the Doncaster/Balwyn/Templestowe area. That being said, people from as far as Williamstown are regulars at this humble little café. Unassuming from the outside with ample free parking just outside the restaurant, you wouldn’t think that this place would be anything to rave about. But from my very first visit with relatives, I must say or scream that this place is really the bomb! Forget half-baked, try hards that claim to serve authentic Malaysian fare. I’ve tried most of the dishes on the menu and can’t decide which is my favourite but I have to say the Char kway teow, Penang assam laksa and the Har mee are top of my list. Quick, efficient service is the norm here but the iconic clanging of the large blackened woks, clashing of utensils and the intense aroma(fumes) of authentic hawker fare is what gives this place its original and unsurpassed charm.
