The Toolshed was established in 1984 by prominent Sydney lesbian and gay rights activist and entrepreneur, Dawn O’Donnell (1928 — 2007) — a significant figure credited with starting the gay and lesbian scene in Sydney’s Oxford Street and Newtown. Upon her passing, O’Donnell’s long term partner Aniek Baten took over the business, ensuring that for over 30 years the Toolshed has been gay owned and operated and maintained a strong connection to the community of Sydney.
While the Toolshed was initially created to specifically support the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities, it has always fundamentally strived to be a place that welcomes ‘everyone’.
