The chocolate meringue and croissant I had here were delicious but the almond/pear tart was average. The base of the tart was not crunchy. Though the flavours of the almond paste and sliced pear were right, they were fridge cold so too firm but that’s just me. The hot chocolate was average. So you need to try a few things to find your favourites here though the shop had a steady stream of customers at 2:30pm on a Saturday afternoon.

We called in a light lunch ordered a baguette which was a bit hard to do as they didn’t seem to want to make it. I got them to listen and they made something for our lunch having said that the baguette was excellent crisp and fluffy at the same time. The Campos coffee was well made. So good that we had a second round unfortunately the éclair we bought to go with coffee was a bit spongy and not crisp.

There is something about Crow’s Nest. There are so many new places opening and while they all look like they should be great, in different ways they all seem to miss the mark. La Baguette has unfortunately decided not to buck this trend. We stumbled across this shabby-chic little café on a search for bread rolls to go with a pumpkin soup I had made. French patisseries are not something Sydney does well so I had hopes for this one. Upon entering I was greeted with a beautiful display case of pastries and cakes and a not so beautiful look on the face of the girl behind the counter with service to match. My partner is a passive sort of guy and not big on «scenes» so I didn’t react(much) to the oozing ‘tude switching between indifference and disdain. Usually that is where the story would end but I was really keen on a croissant and coffee and Bill was getting a bit hungry/angry(or hangry). I asked for a toasted croissant with jam. I was handed a cold croissant… with jam. I thought toasted was the default setting for croissants but apparently not. Bill was handed a sausage roll from a non-heated case which we were assured was fresh and still hot. It was lukewarm but a hangry man is not a picky man. The coffee is Campos which takes some serious lack of care to get wrong. It was ok… not great but passable. The croissant(once warmed) was actually really good and they bake them on site. The sausage roll, I was told by Bill, was a 10⁄10 for size and a 1⁄10 for taste and like I said this guy is not picky. We got some white sourdough rolls to take away. I’m not sure if she misheard again or if they haven’t been open long enough to get a good starter going but they were pretty much just regular rolls. I feel that with customer service training for the counter girl and some barista training for the barista this place could be pretty good. The décor is lovely and the cakes look great. Unfortunately based on my experience I probably won’t be back to sample more.

Finally found a chance to try out a new(but no longer newest) kid on the block in Crows Nest. Lovely array of cakes, breads and other naughty delights, including pies, quiches and rolls, plus toasties made to order. Judging by the size of the bakery out the back I think the majority is made in-house. Coffee was strong, rich and dark, Campos I think, and the quiche was good, as was my almond tuille(?!) although it may have been a bit stale. Interior ambience is good although it looks like the plants they put in have all succumbed to the heat up high — best swap them for plastic or silk! Worth a try — we will be back for a pie.
