The café itself is slick, dark and kind of sexy. A fire roars in the corner, the bar is filled with many a fine wine and mirrors above the tables gives the small café and bar a larger feel. On this particular morning Usher was playing over the sound system and we were feeling the vibes. Groovy. Staff were very professional, but not as friendly as I’m used to. We all have our days. Since our last visit the menu has changed slightly, and as soon as I spotted the Blue Cheese Mushroom Crêpe with Asparagus($ 17) I’d made up my mind. Cheese, mushrooms and a fluffy crêpe to mop up the creamy sauce? Yes please. It was everything I’d imagined. The mushrooms were cooked perfectly, and the sauce was absolutely divine. Blue cheese is normally very strong and overpowering, but the subtly in this dish was perfect. The crêpe was thin, slightly sweet(to balance the cheese) and went beautifully with the freshness and crunch of the asparagus. This dish is a winner, and I felt very French and very naughty ordering such a decadent meal for breakfast, but you only live once, right? Even E was keen to try my breakfast! She was also very impressed.

I used to come here quite a bit before the menu changed to a tapas-type one. I must say I was pretty diappointed as they used to do the best burgers and pizza — at a great price too! The breakfast used to be great value too — after my first visit after the big change, i probably wont be rushing back. Im sure the food is good and it always seems to have a crowd in there at dinner time, so they’re doing something right :)

Visiting the Hang Out Bar N Café was one of the worst experiences I have ever had to endure in Perth. I found the barista to be rude and arrogant as he told me that they do not have a coffee or tea menu. He even ordered us to sit at a table of his choice in the empty café. It takes a lot for me to become unsettled but I quickly found myself battling to suppress the uncontrollable urge to jump the counter and give this barista a lesson in customer service. My table did not even have sugar or hand wipes. I will not be returning to this establishment again, unless the world is on the verge of a post-apocalyptic disaster. Only then, I will happily revisit with a coil of rope and a jerry can full of petrol.

Have only done the breakfast and lunch but both are good however the breakfast is a standout(big and tall — only breakfast that gives you a steak on the plate as well as everything else that goes with a big breakfast) coffee is good here too and a cheeky pint over lunch(can attest the burgers and steak sandwich are winners) is always a good way to spend a sunny afternoon outside.

The hangout is a local fave of mine. I’ve even cycled there for dinner to allow myself to do justice to a bottle of wine and weaved my way home. I think this business has recently changed hands but is still good… just different. Hangout regulars would know the nightly curry and wine special, which is now gone :(but its definitely still worth going for the lamb shoulder for mains… drool…and the polenta chips for starters. Service can be patchy, but its a small place so its easy to flag down a waiter/ress. Don’t bother blowing your diet on desserts, they are crêpe-centric and not that great. Winter is great, they have heaters going inside and out, making it a cosy place to enjoy a meal

TERRIBLESERVICEANDEVENWORSEFOOD! Last year I was living in Como and The Hangout was my local café. I loved it, for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a quick takeaway coffee before work, the food & service were always great. HOWEVERTHISISNOTSOANYMORE! We arrived on a Sunday morning and get a table for 3 quite easily for the breakfast rush, this was the only good thing about this visit. A waitress came up and took our orders, but we were told that she could only take drink orders and that there was a 30 minute wait on breakfast. We agreed and although a little confused about the ordering process, ordered some coffees, juices & an iced coffee. 10 minutes later another waitress came over to take food orders, We were told they were out of a certain type of bacon & the sausages, so I settled on the hangout big & tall breakfast which was the advertised special. 15 more minutes passed and 1 orange juice was placed on the table. Another 10 minutes and the rest of our drinks arrive. The juice wasn’t fresh and was straight out of the carton, the iced coffee didn’t even seem to have any traces of real coffee and it wouldn’t surprise me if that was pre-made also. Finally after about a 45 minute wait, the food comes out. Both of my friends meals looked okay, if not a bit on the dull side, however my hangout big & tall was terrible. 1 piece of cold, rock hard toast, 2 eggs, 1 overcooked shriveled up steak, half a tomato, a gigantic pile of bacon & sloppy mushrooms completely unseasoned. It looked like something a 10 year old would make for mum on mother’s day. blerrrgh The waitress then came and asked how our meals were, now I NEVER do this but I just couldn’t bite my tongue and told her mine was awful & I couldn’t eat it and I wanted to send it back. She just stood there and stared, when she asked what was wrong I told her, it was cold and stale and just horrible. She still looked shocked and took my plate away. I decided I would just share my sister’s meal with her as she wasn’t that hungry. after a while the waitress comes back and asks if I would like another big & tall breakfast which I promptly told her no thanks, no way. THEN about 10 minutes later she brings out another breakfast and plonks it in front of me, I looked at her confused and said I don’t want this, please take it away and she says«no, the chef wants you to try it» Now I wasn’t going to sit there with the waitress standing over me and tell her, oh okay this is much better, as it was exactly the same meal. And on top of that both of my friends had already finished their own breakfast long ago. I said no thank you, I am sorry but please take this food away it is horrible, to which she grabbed my plate and stormed off. I got up straight away to pay as there was a bit of a tense, awkward feeling in the café by that time. I told the girl at the till that I was happy to pay for my friends food & the drinks(even though they were also horrible) but would not be paying for the meal that I sent back as it was inedible. At this moment the waitress who had taken my order came tearing out of the kitchen and shouted, «no you have to pay for the meal! you ate a bit of the meat!» I had literally had one bite, enough to tell me it was overcooked and tough and I DIDNOT want to try the rest. I told her no, I am not paying for that it wasn’t good and I couldn’t eat it. She then stormed back off into the kitchen and I could hear her quite clearly«discussing» it with the chef like a young schoolgirl. The girl behind the till looked dumbfounded and a man I assumed was the manager came over, without so much as an apology or even a smile and eye contact just told her, «Oh just get rid of it» and wiped the item from the bill. I tried to smooth things over and let the girl know that I honestly do not normally send meals back and that it really was that bad, and that I was sorry for any misunderstanding but was just completely ignored and the staff wouldn’t even look at me. I have NEVER experienced ruder staff in my life. 1 tip, if you are going to hire a group of 16 year olds to run your café make sure they leave the schoolgirl bitchiness at home and maybe train them on a little thing called CUSTOMERSERVICE! I have worked at a café before and if a customer ever wanted to send a meal back, no questions were asked and apologies were made. YOUDONOTARGUEANDTRYANDINTIMIDATECUSTOMERS. I don’t know how these places survive.

Hangout? Why not. Dropped by a month of so ago after getting a menu in my letter box. The chilli mussels sounded good and were reasonably priced. The bar/café is laid back and very chilled out. A good spot for a quiet coffee or catch up with a friend. The service was excellent and the coffee was very good too. Will return.

I took some interstate visitors, who were staying nearby, for a drink and possibly a meal. The décor and buzz of patronage was plesantly surprising and welcoming. I liked how they had a mixture of seating: outdoor big tables with bench seats by the road; padded vinyl chairs and tables on the terrace and a mix of sit down tables and couch nook indoors. Sadly, the service didn’t live up to the first impressions. The two wait staff were so diametrically opposed, it was hard to figure out if they were actually serious employees. One was well-dressed and had that air of nonchalence about her that we’ve all come to know(and dislike) that epitomises and dominates the Perth service industry. We call it «Whateverrrrr service». The other lass was in a daggy t-shirt and pants ensemble and was so out of place we thought she was dragged from the kitchen and thrust in to the limelight of front of house because the regular waiter/ress didn’t show. The wine list was the standard poor choice by the glass that you see when café/restaurant/bars are stretching themselves too thin. The evening meal choices were mostly either stodgy or fried. Perhaps this place ought to decide what its going to be — either café, restaurant or bar — and focus there.

The Hangout has recently opened on Preston St in Como, and after receiving rave reviews as the«best burgers in Perth» from work colleagues I thought I’d check it out. I was not disappointed! Took my parents there for lunch on a Saturday and was immediately impressed with the welcoming staff. The location is cute and cosy with an «at home» feel. But the standout was the burgers. Absolutely delicious — I had the steak sandwich for $ 16.50 which was definitely value for money. The next day I took my partner there as he was keen to know what the fuss was about. We arrived at 11:45am on Sunday and were asked«are you here for breakfast or lunch»? Without hesitation we answered«both». Again, we weren’t disappointed — the breakfast was cooked to order, and the coffee was brewed to perfection. We then sat by the fire reading the free newspapers and magazines, waited half an hour and then ordered lunch. Topped with a glass of wine — what a perfect way to spend a leisurely Sunday. Highly Recommended!
