Other businesses could take a leaf out of Sushi Point’s book when it comes to customer service. We admittedly are regulars there for lunch but had a chance on several occasions to try out new flavours and comment on them, especially when the owners were introducing a new range of sushi boats — I love the wakame(seaweed salad) one. Another example of great service is this: one day I was speaking to a friend at the counter who works about 4 km away but comes down to Sushi Point once a week for lunch despite using most of her lunch time up in the exercise. The girl behind the counter said she could call down an order and she’d deliver it — even better if she got a couple more people in the office involved — see what I mean? Great service. The sushi rolls are fresh and so cheap at around $ 2 — the tuna is yum! and in the colder months the Japanese yellow curry is great.

After a few years living overseas I have come to the realisation that in Australia, we are incredibly lucky to have an endless supply of takeaway sushi shops, specifically those that sell hand rolls for 2 – 3 dollars. In fact, we have access to so many that we can afford to be picky. Some of them are terrible, offering a range of heavily Westernised items. I once came across a place that served smoked salmon nigiri with melted cheese on top. Don’t tell me that is a traditional diet staple of the Japanese. Sushi Point is one of the places that I happily recommend. Even when I purchased my very late lunch close to 4pm, the sushi tasted fresh. Not only do they serve sushi, but they have a hot menu featuring popular Japanese cooked dishes. Another aspect of this store that I’m sure will make them popular is the fact that they offer gluten free options in their sushi range. If you would rather sit down and eat, you can. There is a small terrace area with tables and chairs. It overlooks one of the main shopping streets in Cleveland and even though there are the occasional passing cars, it is quite a pleasant setting. Although they have set opening hours, the restaurant will close a little early if they run out of sushi.
