New Shanghai

Nice place for lunch. They have expanded next door as well and now there is less of a wait. The seating is less cramped. Service is still good and so is the food. With the increase in the number of places to eat in the Chase and Westfield competition is hotting up. This should be good for the consumer.
Let market forces dictate who will survive.

This is my favourite place for dumplings and dim sum. The xiao long bao and pan fried pork buns are top notch. The soup dumplings have a great silky pastry filled with a decent amount of soup, the ginger flavour is not overpowering. The fried pork bun pastry has a flavour reminiscent of the New York City pretzels I ate growing up, which for me just nails it.
The main dishes I’ve found to be over priced, small portioned, and just not that spectacular so I avoid them. The service is also pretty slow and inattentive, so despite my penchant for their dumplings have to take a few stars off overall.
Try the Pearl River beer: tasty, cheap, and 5.3% ABV!

Believe me, unless you steal my duck fat, I don’t hold a grudge… but I can’t let go of that feeling! You know, the one you get where you feel that all that is wrong in the waiter’s day/​life/​family/​Pokemon profile is your fault. Audrey agreed with me so don’t argue!
So this a three-​star review of four-​star Chinese food. The dumplings are nice, well cooked and very tasty. There is an elegant harmony to a dumpling that must be respected: the subtle yeast flavour of the elastic dough — not chewy, elastic — has to prepare your taste buds for the liquid explosion of salty broth. It then instantly combines with a one fifth vinegar and four fifth soy sauce mix, to allow for the fleshy, powerful explosion of, in tonight’s instance, crab meat … or maybe I’m just overthinking it.
Pork buns are usually a bit dry on the outside and soggy on the inside. New Shanghai’s pork bun are thought like a soft shell taco, with a slice of pork belly and zucchini inside a folded bun slice: a result neither dry nor soggy!
On this positive note, remember: a spoon of duck fat a day — repeat after me — keeps the doctor away!

Tasty dumplings, nicely decorated restaurant in Chatswood Chase and good prices. Service is not so great, the waiters rush around and slam dishes down on the table. Also the place is busy and usually there is a wait.

Food is okay, but the staff is not well trained at all and can’t be more dismissive.
I’ve had multiple occasions when some waitress come by and ask me what I’ve ordered, only 20 mins or so after I placed my order.
Imagine yourself in such a terrifying situation.
If you’re really in the mood for some Shanghainese food I suggest you go to ‘Shanghai Stories 1938′ on the Concourse. They have all the delicate delights you’re looking for.

XIAO LONG BAO — must order dish!

My advice to you is to go to New Shanghai hungry, very hungry. The food is so good that it will be hard to stop yourself eating. I’m not kidding, you’ll say oh let’s just have one more dish… it’s a one way stop to food comaville. The dumplings are delicious, you can’t go wrong with the steamed pork buns. My favourite dish is the Shepherd’s purse and won ton soup and the green beans with pork and shrimp. You’ll have to wait but the line moves fast and it’s worth it.

This is my absolute go — to place whenever I am staying in Chatswood. I go to the outlet in the food court at Chatswood Chase, but I believe there is another one around in Lemongrove. Dumplings being made right in front of us as fast as they are appearing out on the tables. There is often a line up outside the door and there is no reason to wonder why. This place is cracking. There is nothing comparable in home-​town Perth, food wise. Which makes it all that more special when I can get there. Do yourself a favour if you’re in the area. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

This places always busy! Generally have to take a ticket and wait but it’s worth it!

Definitely quick dinner on a fri night. Always pleAsed as punch with this place :)

I went to New Shanghai for yesterday’s Unilocal Elite event. The food was so good — and there was so much of it.
My favourite dish was the duck pancakes — only they came out towards the end so I was already very full! The actual pancake was more like a pork bun (soft and doughy, and split down the middle). You assemble it yourself — my +1 and I really enjoyed those.
We’ll be back — very impressed.

YUMMY! Went here for a Unilocal Elite event and it was awesome. There was sooo much food! Got to sample a broad range of dishes. They were seriously all good, but my favorites would have to be:
–Shanghai-​style deep fried fish soaked in herb, spice & dark soy sauce
–Pan fried pork dumpling
–Xiao Long Bao
–Duck pancakes
The pan fried pork dumplings were tricky to eat. Couldn’t find a way to eat them without squirting my unfortunate seat mates with juice. Sorry guys.
Loved the décor — wasn’t expecting that much attention to detail since it’s in a food court. The waiters were awesome and accommodating — they gave us some vegetarian dumplings because someone at our table couldn’t eat meat. PLUS! They actually had these baskets on the ground were you could dump your coats/​scarves/​bags. Wheee.
This seems like a busy place — went there on a Wednesday night and it was packed!

I posted this review originally for the wrong location! There are two right near each other, but here goes again…
We loved just about everything they threw at us here! Pan Fried Pork Buns? Killer! Pork Dumplings? Mmmm… Crispy Duck? Solid! Pork Belly? F-​Ing amazing!!! We really couldn’t find fault with anything, even a couple of items that weren’t our favorite were done perfectly, just not something we would get again, but that’s probably more our fault for being unrefined than anything they did!
The atmosphere is a perfect setting for dumplings too, with the usual display window to watch the dumplings being made, to the cool, old school Shanghai look, it all goes well. I would have worn my best zoot suit had I known what I was in for. They should open one of these next to Palmer & Co. in the CDB, it’d be cool to roll out of here and into the speakeasy…
All in all, everything from the décor, to the prompt service to the easy parking make this a perfect choice for either a well earned dinner after a long day of shopping, or a nice dinner out when you’re craving some dumpling love…
Plenty of other things on the menu, but have’t gotten around to them yet, but we will, if they’re as good as the rest of the food, you can’t miss here!

Holy gut-​bust. I spent an Elite event here the likes of which I’ve never experienced.
This event, a proper sit-​down meeting at a handful of tables at New Shanghai in Chatswood Chase was like they were trying to kill us with food. Heaps and heaps of food so delicious you couldn’t stop.
The spare rib mouthfuls were saucy. The edamame were fresh. The drunken chicken was flavourful. The arrays of dumplings — steamed and pan-​fried just didn’t stop coming, and we were fighting over them. The crispy duck pancakes were actually in puffy split pieces of dough, not thin rice paper. The pot of saucy pork belly was juicy and decadent. Even the rice was soaked in XO sauce, making it sweet and tasty. Desserts were almost too sweet to finish.
It’s noon the next day and I have no desire for lunch yet.
It’s a funky restaurant, much better than you’d guess from its location on a food court. Décor is fun. Service was quick and friendly. The kitchen area can be seen through glass if you want to see how it’s all done.

My cousins love this place and took me here on a Saturday night around 5pm. It’s located in a food court area but has a very cool Asian décor. They said it’s usually packed and you have to take a number but luckily it wasn’t too busy and we got seated right away.
I let them order and we got a few different dishes. We got a stir fried beef noodle which was good but a bit greasy. The steamed pork dumplings was yummy, reminded me of din tai fung’s. The fried pork balls were delicious, green beans a bit average. The best dish was the tofu and egg which was different but super tasty. Service was pretty good, they were accommodating with the two kids. Overall good place, bit heavy.
