Salsa verde with chips is pretty authentic. Just tastes like it came out of a jar, not homemade. Enchilada with beef, beans, cheese and rice was pretty good appetisers. Don’t really need to buy main size portions unless you’re intending on sharing with a partner or friend. Gold with 1800 tequila was pretty strong. Love the margaritas though.

Food was ok nothing to really rave about from the lunch menu but you do get a free wine or sangria with lunch. Service was not real good and we were the only customers at that time.

Amigos might be quite a friendly establishment as the name suggests but I didn’t really want to go back there again afterwards. IMHO this place is the epitome of Mexican cuisine in Australia. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great places out there(you just need to know where to look) but this one is a shocker especially when you consider how much of a levy they put on the prices just to be serving something different on Lygon Street. For a Mexican meal in a similar price bracket(perhaps a few bucks cheaper), I’d definitely prefer to go Los Amates on Johnston Street. I’d even prefer to have a shits and giggles night at a Taco Bill. In short, a let down on value and the food is average fare.

Nestled amongst Italian restaurants, Amigos, a Mexican inspired restaurant, is definitely unique to Lygon Street. However, the food here is just as average as many of the Italian restaurants on Lygon Street. An indicator of the authenticity of Mexican food is the guacamole. The guacamole at Amigos is average and expensive($ 12.50). Most Mexican restaurants charge around $ 9 for the same amount of guacamole. I ordered the chilli con carne and burrito. The chilli con carne wasn’t bad; it was probably my favourite dish — enough spice and good beans. The burrito was average and also expensive($ 26). They do have a variety of burritos to choose from, which is great, but the rice and beans don’t taste amazing. At Amigos, you’re not getting value for money. It is at least $ 3 more per item than most Mexican places such as Mexicali Rose, Taco Bill, and Los Amates. Their tequila list is also nothing special. It has the usual tequilas that can be found at most Mexican restaurants. Amigos is probably my least favourite Mexican restaurant in Melbourne. If you’re craving something Mexican, there are better options out there.

Surrounded by a stronge force of Italian restaurants, Amigos is a great place to take the taste buds for something different. The menu offers a range of traditional Mexican dishes including Nachos, Buritos, Fajitas and Enchiladas. The offerings are all enriched with flavour that is bound to make you feel spice and warmth(I recommend dressing for a warmer climate, bring a jacket for outside but you will warm up inside). I find that every time I dine at Amigos, the food does take quite a long time to come out, so be prepared to wait around 30 minutes for your meal. The waiters try to be helpful but it has gone disastrously at times. So ensure your clear about what you want but apart from that the venue and ambience is intimate, great for a date or a night out with close friends.
