Food and drinks are reasonably priced so that’s always a plus, food is good but not restaurant quality but Saturday nights are always fun playing poker with the Ontilt group

I used to DJ at this place. Seriously. On most Saturday nights in my early 20s, I’d be on the decks, playing everything from Bowie to ‘La Bamba’, Kylie to Queen. I even appeared on one of their television adverts. Not sure why. I’ve never bet on a dog race in all my life. But hey, you go where the money is… If ever you’re invited to join someone here, don’t be too afraid. Just view it with a pair of rose-coloured lenses on and you’ll have a camp time. It’s one of those places that might double up nicely as a function centre for bar mitzvahs. Dingy, until the organisers decorate it with really kitsch streamers and balloons. Throw in a smoke machine and some red/blue/green flashing lights, and you’ve got a trippy night out with a real, er, difference.

When home in Perth, there are few things I enjoy more than a night out with the guys at Cannington Greyhounds. I’ve been a punter since before I turned eighteen and«the dogs» always has something of a carnival atmosphere to the place. There’s the nice grassy area out the front where families with kids can watch the races while laying out a blanket and enjoying a sausage sizzle, the large, shed-like main area for the dour punter, complete with bookmaker’s ring, pseudo-casino games, and TAB access, and finally there’s Checkers Restaurant, for the slightly more elegant experience, complete with entertainment, buffet dinner, and a prime view of the finishing post from the multi-tiered dining area through huge, glass windows. My only complaint is that the main interior area could be a tiny bit less stark and depressing, the snack food vendor a little more interesting, and the overall decent quality of the food in the restaurant could afford to be dialed up just a notch for the price — otherwise, a great night out!
