The Alehouse Project

Not bad for a beer. Like a saloon bar with a good range of beers on tap. Basic set up.

When first moving to melbourne this was my local go to watering hole. There is a different range of beers every few weeks. Grab a stool and have a chat to the bartender or beer expert and they will tell you more than you want to know about your beer if you’re interested.
I have not consumed a meal here in a while but from previous experience it was delicious. If dining ask your bartender what they would recommend as a tapas to go with your beer of choice.

Another local haunt of mine. The clue’s in the name as to why this is an absolute must destination if you love craft beer (and if you don’t, you’re wrong); one of the best in Melbourne in my opinion. There’s always some interesting beers to try and the selection of 12 constantly rotating taps keeps things interesting.
The place is laid back, service friendly and knowledgeable, only downside is that it’s not the cheapest place to drink but the quality and variety of beers makes it worth the price. There’s also A/​C (very welcome on days like today; 38C). There’s a small garden out back which is usually pretty quiet.
Haven’t tried the food but they have some daily specials which seem popular.

My last review was a year ago and mainly based on the food. I should’ve just focused on the beer. This is an amazing craft beer venue. The rotating selection of craft beer is more than great.
Also the passionate, knowledgeable and friendly staff are fab.
And the AC is just amazing on a day like today (39C).

Well, I was having a beer at the pub across the road and I saw this rather conspicuous sign saying ‘Alehouse’ sticking out from one of the shops, so I decided that I would go and check it out. Low and behold I had discovered another awesome craft-​beer bar. Okay, it your craft beers tend to gravitate around the Little Creatures, Fat Yaks et al, then unfortunately you probably won’t find them on tap here. No, this place is a craft-​beer bar in every sense of the word — they have a rotating extravaganza of beers from near and far, and definitely none of those boring old fares that you will find in many of the other pubs (if you want a Carlton Draught, then that is what the pub across the road is for). I have to say that I love this place, especially the quaint beer garden out the back. Mind you it does get pretty packed on a Friday night though.

I love The Alehouse. It’s nothing fancy, it doesn’t distract you with lavish glassware and dramatic interior. It serves incredible beer in a comfy atmosphere and that’s more than enough.
I have spent many an afternoon sitting in their back courtyard (which you may not even know exists) sipping on pints of whatever the most dramatic flavoured beer I could order.
They have 12 continuously rotating taps but you will not find any Carlton Draught or VB — this is *quality* beer. Most recently I enjoyed an Imperialistic Hound, a dark lager from Black Dog Brewery — it was dark, creamy and delicious but they also have a range of IPAs, lagers and even beers blended with coffee and hibiscus.
Yes, they have other drinks available but I personally think that would be like going to Brother Baba Budan and asking for a cup of tea. It’s just not right.
My only issue with The Alehouse is that does end up being a monthly treat for my partner and I. It is just a squeak too expensive to make it a regular beer-​drinking destination. But if what you want is a quality ale, this should definitely be on your list.

The Alehouse Project had a great range of beer pouring from their twelve taps. Their long names were all written on the blackboard along with their style and ABV.
From the Australian, American and Belgian beers and ciders we chose jugs of Brooklyn Lager. We drank these on the couches in their back room which was surprisingly available on a Friday night.

Fantastic range of beers at any time of the week. Great vibe. Very easy place to kick back for a few hours. Function area available and is awesome. Bring one or many people to share a great time!!!

There you have it. The Alehouse Project is now my second favourite bar in Brunswick East. Large open plan, beer garden at the back, comfy couches, friendly bartenders and plenty of booze on offer; this place is cool. Really cool.
They pride themselves on the broad range of craft beers that they have on tap and so they should. I had a chilli choc black lager from NZ which was really tasty. They are not just about the beer though. They also have a few single malt scotch. I have my mind set on the Yamazaki 18 years old at the moment — I just have to convince myself to bagger it and spend the $ 30!
The Alehouse also serves food, my housemate had lunch there recently and she said that she liked what she had so…
It’s in a great spot (now now. I’m not being biased because I live in the area…), it serves good food and there’s plenty of booze on offer… What more can you ask for?

Want an extensive range of different beers to try? This is the place to go. With twelve craft beers on tap, that are rotated on a regular basis, you are spoilt for choice. And, if you can’t decide, the bar staff will help you pick one that matches your tastes.
The food menu changes regularly, and is comprised of snacks, mains and desserts, so I’d suggest visiting often to find out what’s on offer.
On my first visit I had a couple of pints of a delicious dark beer that I failed to take note of and a buger. Our group shared a serve of goat’s cheese balls off the snack menu and each had a burger. For the vego’s out there, I’m told the vege burger is pretty spectacular.
The venue is quite spacious, but has a cozy feel to it. I think this is due to the exposed brickwork, lounges and long tables for gathering around.
I’m looking forward to a return visit soon.

If you like trying different beers, make a bee line to The Alehouse Project. They have a dozen or so taps that the beer constantly changes on. I’ve been there half a dozen times and I don’t think I’ve seen the same beer twice. Mind you, with that many beers, it gets a bit blurry by the end of the night :-)
The outdoor area is… utilitarian. It works, but isn’t super attractive. The couches inside are new, comfortable and spacious. The benches inside are a nightmare to climb up and over the seat. I’d hate to be a lady with a short skirt on!
I’ve not personally tried anything from the bar menu, but a few drinking pals have and raved about the food. Good small portions, perfect to munch while imbibing.

There are a lot of good things about the Alehouse Project…

* Really nice, comfortable chairs and great Bar stools and benches
* It is right next to public transport
They do have a beer garden out the back however it isn’t the great and most folks that actually smoke on the street.
There is however a down side, last night I went in and they had done the unspeakable! They had switched out the beers on tap again! Twice in one month! I got all confused and had to pick something new… it was all strange and weird and THEY MOVED MY CHEESE!

So I inevitably ended up in Melbourne during Good Beer Week. How dare I…
Alehouse Project was the hub of New Zealand beers during this time, which I was actually kind of bummed about. You see, I was in New Zealand not that long ago, and was craving some Australian beers. But, so be it, I guess I’ll have to suffer through the tasty Kiwi crafts. Life is hard.
OK, so this place has definitely caught on since I was here not too long after opening in 2012. I went twice and it was packed both times. I mean, absolutely packed. Good for them. That being said, long lines would start to form. Perhaps this is because of Good Beer Week, perhaps it’s the new norm, I don’t know. I hope to be back sooner than later to find out, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. However, it could easily take 10 minutes to get a beer. But, the people behind the bar were working hard, and were friendly as could be.
The rest is still the same — delicious craft beers, rotating to allow for change and provide freshness, a space that’s comfortably industrial, and food that… I still haven’t tried it, but it looks good.
If you combine Alehouse Project with Great Northern Hotel just a few tram stops down, I call it the best beer night in Melbourne, hands down.

Yep this place is pretty good. More so if you’re over the dull
boring run of the mill filler sold every where less than impressive beers that
are everywhere and don’t taste so good.
So usually they have about 20 beers on tap, in a blackboard style arrangement
that works well. Food is good but probably shouldn’t have gone here when I
was super hungry as I ate heaps of things and never seemed satisfied. The burger
does not come with cheese so points off for that, but some are clawed back
for the arrangement and style of the burger; it’s constructed rather well.
Simply put «without cheese, a burger is merely an elaborate sandwich.»
I think there should be more in the range of the ciders here and maybe
a snackings menu. But all in all quite good and above the usual claptrap
stale staid all the same type venues.

The Alehouse has a new food menu which has nicely priced burgers and mains on offer, along with the standard bar snack selections. Well done!

You don’t know how hard it is not to jump off the tram every night after work and pop in here for a drink or seven. The lure of twelve rotating beer taps, delicious food (including some of, if not THE best onion rings I’ve ever eaten) and a great atmosphere is a little too much to resist for much longer.
The Alehouse staff are very knowledgeable, as you would expect in a beer nirvana such as this. It gets busy in here, but it’s usually quiet enough to have a quick chat with them as you try and decide which one of the delicious beverages on offer you will have. They’re more than happy to let you taste test one before you commit to a full glass too. A great choice of beers are on offer and you’re bound to find something you like on the rotating taps (the upcoming beers are listed on a wall next to the bar), but if you don’t like anything on tap check out the beer fridges or even try one of their beer cocktails!
In the front of the bar there are comfy couches along one side, with larger tables on the other side. In the adjoining room is the same setup, though this can be booked for private functions and it’s also where the Wednesday night Trivia Night is held. Trivia is free, fun, and prizes include a bar tab, so you really can’t go wrong with that. Out the back is a beer garden with a mix of tables and chairs in a variety of shapes and sizes, with a shady tree or two thrown in for good measure.
As I mentioned, the food is great here. The first time I popped in the kitchen was being renovated and my order of fries was forgotten, but since then service has been prompt and the food delicious when it has arrived.
I’ve been to Alehouse a few times now and will keep going back. I have managed to resist jumping off the tram to pop in so far, somehow but that won’t last long… especially with an all too convenient tram stop right outside!

What can i say. 12 craft beers on rotating taps. Amazing food. Do i really need to say anymore?
There is a beer garden out the back, couches, tables and they even have a trivia night on Wednesdays. This place will absolutely become my local now that i’ve moved to the area.
