On a weekend ride on the Merri Creek Trail, I wasn’t sure what I would find. I found many cyclists, walkers, joggers, and families with children and dog in tow. About 15 – 20 minutes into the ride, I also found a velodrome. Who doesn’t love a velodrome?! Okay, so a velodrome isn’t one of those things that people just love, regardless, it was a cool find. The Roberts Reserve Cycling Velodrome is a part of the Brunswick Cycling Club, but seems to be open to the public. I’m good on my bike, but am I good on a velodrome? Not really. It’s quite scary. There were areas that were quite steep that I avoided. I started slowly in the inside ring and moved to the next ring, then moved to the next ring. I stopped at the third ring — that was as steep as I wanted to go. This was a fantastic find and free! I’ll definitely come back again, particularly for the novelty of it.

Located a short walk or ride along the Merri Creek Trail just North of the CERES Community Environment Park, you’ll find an outdoor velodrome associated with Brunswick Cycling Club. I’m not sure whether it is still frequently used but the velodrome is in good condition and is really fun to ride. The walls are very steep in parts and you can get some real speed up dropping down from the top to the shallower parts of the track. My rickety old bike seemed to struggle a little bit on the steeper parts but on a track or racing bike, this would be even more fun. You can’t miss the velodrome if you are travelling along the Merri Creek trail. The path runs right next to it and you will often see parents, kids and regular people having a go at what is a lot of fun. I didn’t know it existed until today but will probably go for another spin next time I’m in this neck of the woods.
