I, like most other Aussies, like a good pie. The kind of pie that’s hot, fresh, with flaky pastry on top, soft pastry on the bottom and big delicious chunks of tender meat in a thick gravy that won’t fall apart and dump on your clothes when you’re eating it. I spotted the Goat Pie Guy on the 50 meals to try in Brisbane list and while meandering through the Blackwood Street markets I was thrilled to see that he was there. The line up was only a good sign. I took my place behind other eager pie lovers and soon enough was at the front of the queue. I made the mistake of only purchasing 1 pie. The deluxe. With hot pie in hand I ambled home to share my spoils with the husband.(2nd mistake). The pie that greeted me upon release from the brown paper bag was golden, flakey, I was already drooling. After carefully dividing the pie in to equal portions I set about delicately eating(inhaling) the pie. It was everything it promised to be and more. The meat, was big, chunky and falling apart with tenderness, the gravy was thick but not gluggy and was the perfect flavour for the goat meat. The pastry was exactly what you want in a pie, crispy and flakey on top soft but firm on the bottom. I can tell you right now that from being served by THEPIEGUY who was friendly, happy and just plain cool to the heaven that was that goat pie, if and when they ever add lamb, beef or bacon to their meat pies I will be hunting him down where he sets up. This one is an absolute winner. One of THEBEST pies I’ve ever had.

Show me goat meat and I will happily cook it in a curry or prepare a bowl of bracing soup. Finding goat meat in Brisbane is tough however, and finding places that serve it even tougher. Initially apprehensive about eating cooked goat meat in a pie(what an odd combination!), I was blown away by the taste explosion I experienced after tucking into the Moroccan Pie(approx $ 7) from the Goat Pie Guy. The meat was soft and tender(as goat meat ought to be), the gravy of the right consistency and with an even distribution of spices. I couldn’t stop at one! I went back for the Himalayan and we even wrapped a couple to eat later. The Goat Pie Guy knows his meat and is undoubtedly a master at pies. Hope to see him at our local Nundah Markets soon some day.
