New Shanghai is my GOTO for dumplings in town. Why you may ask? Before you get to the entrance of New Shanghai, you actually see people in the window making FRESHHOMEMADE dumplings! I like the prawn dumplings with chili, peanut and sesame oil! Very tasty. The spring rolls are also nice. I loved my hot and sour soup as well! The Shanghai stir fried noodles with pork is also a favorite dish. I could probably eat two whole plates, it is that good! If you get a spicy dish, order a fresh fruit ice drink– I had the lychee, and loved it! Service is quick, and food comes out relatively fast. There can be a queue to get a table; I tend to go during non-peak hours(say, 3 pm), and I don’t have a problem being seated right away.

Not bad CHINESE food, food can have 5 star, but there is typical rude Chinese service here. We came just after 8pm on a Monday, restaurant’s trading hour is till 9pm. Straight away we were told it’s the last order. At 8:30pm bill was delivered, and staff started stacking tables and chairs, 8:45pm all the sweeping cleaning commenced… it’s not a nice experience! Most staff here are students, which has nothing wrong, they were not intentionally rude, however, staff training and management from the restaurant requires urgent attention.

Happy hour promotion in the afternoon. Staff were having their lunch. Quality of food was above average. I ordered the crispy skin chicken with spicy garlic sauce and noodles soup, steamed dumplings and longan flavoured black tea. I must say the steamed dumplings tasted the best. If i were to return, I’ll try other staple dishes instead of the noodles.

Good food, bad service. I ordered a drink and never received it, also took a long time to take the order.

Decent meals i guess, bit pricey but thats what you’d expect from new restaurants. If im paying 5 bucks for a cola it would be nice for it to fly itself in on a golden jet. They wouldn’t let us or any of staff move 2 tables together, even though we were having a birthday dinner and the two tables were about 4 feet apart and no one could talk to each other. Was hoping for something as good as little Singapore but dissapointed by general lack of enthusiasm and interest in customers and meals. Ordered braised beef noodle soup, $ 13.50 and litterally got 5 pieces of meat the size of a spoon head and the thickness of a handkerchief. Literally… Unfortunately everyone in the party had to pay by cash because the card machine was broken, yes this stuff happens but only 1 machine for the whole restaurant? Its a ok place but i would definitely not go again. Edit. Was glad to see staff handle problems well. My brother got a dumpling dish and found bits of a plastic container in one, they replaced it and apologized. But the manager looked to give f**k all. The waiters/esses seem nice.

I used to love New Shanghai back when it just opened, but the last two times I visited — I was very disappointed. What was once a place with great service and quality food has now become what I can only describe as slightly dingy with slow and unenthusiastic service. Ordered our usual of beef and coriander dumplings, crispy skin chicken with rice and tried something new from the special menu — deep fried rice with mixed seafood. As someone who can’t eat pig products for religious reasons, I assumed that a mixed seafood dish wouldn’t contain any ham/pork(never have had this issue before with a seafood dish). But before I noticed the meat in it, I did taste it and found it very disappointing flavour-wise. The«crispy» skinned chicken wasn’t crispy at all, and the dumplings(which I normally love the and are my favourite part of New Shanghai) were just not the same as usual. I don’t know what happened to New Shanghai, I used to love this place! What I would have once rated as a 5⁄5 in the past is now a 2⁄5 stars in my eyes.

I have always loved this place. The last three visits though have been disappointing, the soup dumplings don’t seem to have any soup in them anymore? Luckily they have opened a small take away in the MYER center and I am happy to report that the dumplings from their smaller franchise are far yummier, just like I originally remember from New Shanghai!

The food is great and the staff are helpful, but the queue to get in the door sucks. It’s very crowded and noisy inside as well(always), but the décor is nice. I’d give it a 4 for the food and a 2 for the queue and ambience. Note: They have a one bill per table policy and so won’t split bills.

The place has always been packed when I’ve come here. The food is fantastic, especially the prawn wonton in peanut chilli sauce, which are my favorite. The service is a bit disorganized, but the food makes up for it. Prices are very fair.

Went back 2 years later to see this place has still got a massive line up for dinner but it does move quite quickly. The quality of food was pretty high, I tried the deep fried versions of the dumplings too but I think the classic steamed were better. The Sweet and Sour pork in dark soy was really quite nice(I like the soft bones and there were plenty in there, so if you aren’t a chinese ‘bone cruncher’ you may not like this dish). The drunken chicken was a cold dish, really tasty as well. The New Shanghai fried noodles with pork and vegies was okay, I found the noodles really fat… a lot fatter than hokkien ones which made this dish a little harder to eat but hey… everything we ordered came out quickly, hot, fresh and super tasty. 2 years and still kicking on with gusto… love this place.

If you’re after super fresh, piping hot Asian at reasonable prices, get in line at New Shanghai! A refreshing presentation of asian dishes that are a change from the tired offerings at so many cliched places in China Town(Super Bowl et al). One of the few restaurants where I feel comfortable ordering something I have absolutely no idea about, because all the food is delicious. The pros: great food, incredibly fresh and you don’t need to see the dumplings being made in the window to tell the food is fresh and well made — you can taste it! Atmosphere is pretty nice for an asian restaurant, no sad fish in tanks or glaring fluorescent lighting. Service is quick and the food comes out as it’s ready. The cons: Usually have to line up as it gets very busy. They do have a minimum EFTPOS surcharge, but with a number of ATMs about 15 feet away in Queens Plaza food court, I’m not sure how anyone gets caught out by this? Get your cash out people! The waitstaff are brusque and there’s limited atmosphere(aside from your dining companions of course), but that’s not something I’m personally bothered by, it’s kind of what I expect! And as long as the food is amazing, that’s all I really care about.

favorite dumping place in the city. Always great food and service. Theres a tricky $ 1 surcharge on eftpos these use and if you do the math that comes out to at least a couple grand a month they make from. ahaah. good food nonetheless.

Hands down my new favourite Asian restaurant. This place is wonderful, the atmosphere is great, service is friendly, menu is affordable and the food is delicious. My friend took me here and I had a feast of goodness. They have these mango and lychee slushy type drinks that were off the chain. I’ve been craving another ever since. I just recommend you get there early before peak hour, but i can assure you that you’ll leave beyond satisfied.

I went to New Shanghai for lunch with my relatives(eight of us!) and were lucky to arrive just before the lunch peak hour and score a table straight away. All dumplings were super fresh and steamed to order, we ordered almost all dumplings on the menu! The pork belly was delicious! Worth trying! Overall we had great experience and enjoyed the food.

No no no. Not a particularly good experience for me at all. Of course everyone will have their own opinion but for me as a vegetarian my time at New Shanghai was not good. Firstly we did have a fairly big group and it was a Friday night so we understandably had to wait a fairly long time for us to be seated — they can’t really help if they’re the new fad. When we were finally seated it took us two goes at having to physically get up and find a wait staff to bring us glasses for our wine before finally getting them. I mean seriously, having to go and find someone to serve you once is bad enough but for them to have needed that twice?! Similarly it took a lot of hand waving and various gestures to finally get someone to then take our order. The menu was fairly large and had a broad range of dumplings/gyoza but only ONE vegetarian?! When this eventually came out it was exceptionally ordinary and I could only eat a few of them. I also ordered«tofu in spice paste» which was in the vegetable section. However once I had got it and started to eat some of it I noticed that the dish actually had some type of meat mince throughout it all?! Why on earth would you sell a tofu dish, in the vegetable section without mentioning that there is some random meat mince in it at all on the menu description. I was mightily over it at this point and my perception of New Shanghai completely tarnished.

New Shanghai was a pleasant surprise. Came here on a Saturday for lunch with a bunch of people. We were seated quite quickly and even though we had to wait for a couple of friends, they were friendly and didn’t push us to order(this is usually the case with busy places like this; the queue outside was looong). We all ordered a couple of different dishes so we could all try. We had the Beef and coriander dumplings, Xiao Long Bao, pan fried Pork dumplings, pork buns, and the Shepherd’s purse & pork wonton with chili oil to start with and that just made me order more and more! :) I have to say, that the Xiao Long Bao and the Beef and Coriander dumplings were my favorite. All the dishes that we have tried, starting with Sichuan style pork mince to braised beef, rice cake with XO sauce, Deep fried prawn coated with salted egg yolk, were delicious and came out very quickly. Unfortunately I ate so much that I couldn’t try their dessert menu. But there will be definitely a next time!

Choosing somewhere to have lunch just got a little easier for those of us who work in the city. Its seems that I’m dining at New Shanghai nearly once a week since my friends and I found this little gem. Great range of dumplings and other Shanghai cuisine which seems to becoming the new favorite food of Brisbaneites. There is nearly always a line up to get a table at lunchtime if you don’t book ahead so keep this in mind. If your new to dumplings, I’d suggest you try as many different dishes that you can manage. We always tend to order heaps dishes but as it’s so tasty there is never any leftovers. Be aware there is a $ 30 minimum on Eftpos so you may need cash if you split the bill as it’s not very expensive. If your in the city and hankering for a dumpling head straight to New Shanghai!

OMG! OMG! OMG! Xiao Long Bao in Brisbane!!!(I’m holding myself back on excessive use of exclamation points, people. Trust me, it’s for your benefit). One visit had hubby & I planning our next trip before we were even out the door. This Shanghai-ese eatery located in the food court of Queen’s Plaza(weird, yes, but delightfully cool) is fitted out to look a bit like Old Shanghai(or maybe a traditional Chinese tea house) and is just a treasure of delicious dumplings and yummy food. We literally ate 43 dumplings between the two of us. But, to our defense, the menu just made us so curious to keep trying more.(Not to mention the price — averages about $ 1.25 /dumpling.) The Pan Fried Pork Buns were an absolute treat, and the crab meat Xiao Long Bao reminded us of ones we had whilst visiting Shanghai in April 2012. The restaurant accepts bookings Mon — Wed, so we were seated straight away. By observing the Asian patrons, we learned to get service just to raise our hand. They are not licensed yet, but we were told they were waiting on that. Service was prompt and being able to watch the dumplings being made out the front add the wonderful experience.

Visit 1: Think«I’ll grab a quick lunch at New Shanghai before the real office lunch crowd arrives». I’m seated and left to my devices. For quite a while. So long in fact, and after attempts to lure the attention of a waiter, I leave. Visit 2: Take-away New Shanghai. «Pan Fried Pork Dumplings» are what I’ve been told are«the best» so I figure with a quick window between meetings I’ll grab them take-away for a dumpling dinner. My order is taken quickly and I go to pay with Eftpos. They’ve got a $ 30 minimum. No biggie, there’s my banks ATM just outside. Huzzah. Wait about 15 mins for the dumplings to arrive and I’m on my way. One word. Squirty. These little suckers are super squirty. Filled with a meaty pork parcel and surrounded by broth, bite into each dumpling delicately(one to avoid burning your tongue and roof of the mouth and two to stop it squirting all over yourself or into the face of the people you’re dining with. You’ve been warned!). The dumplings were tasty but lacked, for me, any wow factor. I should say that while I like dumplings I’m just not at the crazy obsessed about them stage some of my friends are. New Shanghai might be located in a food court but it is restaurant style done pretty well. I feel I need to dine a few more times before I get the full experience and breadth of the menu. Stay tuned…

Fairly new to Brisbane is New Shanghai, the newest addition to an established Shanghainese restaurant chain in Sydney. The ambience is one based on an old Chinese dining parlor, with wooden furnishings, traditional-looking décor, and walls of vintage posters and paintings. The thing about Shanghainese food is that it’s carbs, carbs, carbs! I love carbs, but it is a bit hard to control yourself when things taste good, and then it’s all over. I personally love Northern Chinese food because of all the carbs — soup noodles, dry noodles, rice cake, dumplings, and more dumplings! Yes please. =) We got the Drunken Chicken, Steamed Pork Dumpling Buns [Xiao Long Bao, ], Shallot Pancake [], and the Stir fried Chinese rice cake with Shepherd’s purse & shredded pork [] between the three of us, and it was an adequate amount of food. The Drunken Chicken looked poor, and tasted too much like rice wine, and the other spices(except for salt!) were not quite there. The dish just tasted too much like alcohol and salt, and too little of much else. Their Xiao Long Baos(7.5) are actually ok, with meat, as well as some vegetable inside(which isn’t typical), and the flavoring was alright. It didn’t deserve a standing ovation, and was definitely not even close to being as delicious as the ones at Din Tai Feng. The first comment one of my friends made was that the makers(in the window up front) looked«noob,» and that the dumplings weren’t quite uniform… The Shallot Pancake(6) was an interesting shape, and not at all what I expected, as it was much bread-ier than the usual. I would just recommend buying the store-bought frozen ones from Yi-Mei. Those are absolutely delicious an easy to make. And economical. =) Lastly, we had the stir fried rice cake(11.8), which is actually one of my favorite dishes ever, but this one was quite disappointing. The texture of the rice cake was good, but the flavoring was just all wrong. Everything else had been quite salty up to this point — but this dish ended up being pretty tasteless after all that flavorful food. My overall experience was average, but the service was a bit frazzled, as they brought the wrong food to us twice. I would return, out of curiosity about their other dishes, but I wouldn’t particularly say I would recommend this place for delicious, unadulterated Chinese food.
