I was introduced to Krav Maga when I lived in Texas. This is not the typical martial arts class, and it’s definitely NOT a kind-of-aerobic-with-cute-music class. Krav Maga is Israeli self defense fighting. It’s been developed originally for the military forces and then converted for ordinary people like you and me. KMTA school is the best. Classes are 3 hours long(yes — you read it right — THREE hours.), but you don’t notice the time passing, you have fun and BAM! Suddenly it’s the end. What I like the most, they have terms. Meaning, you start when everybody else starts — trust me, it’s so much easier to follow what’s going on then! Other schools usually don’t have such thing — you just come whenever. My previous school was like this, so my first time there, I was mostly terrified because they were doing some crazy ground defense, and I didn’t even know how to fall… This school has 3 – 4 months terms, you sign up — first class is FREE — there is no obligation to sign up after introductory class! So you can pop in, have a look if you like it or not, and then you can make the decision. Classes are once a week, and they last three hours. You might think — who would be willing to come for three hours class? Are they mad? Well, they might be. But there is logic in this madness. Just imagine. You come ONCE a week. Work your bum up for three hours — learn HEAPS, and then you’re free till next week! Standard class — let’s say you go three times a week — classes start let’s say 6pm-ish. You’re done around 7pm — and then what? Then you’re pretty much done for the evening. Three nights in a week! KMTA way you have only one night to go with. Plus there is less probability you will miss some classes and you will be behind the curriculum — awesome! Ah, yes — there are gradings. Like in most of sports, it’s good to have proper motivation, right? So here you have grades. There are three levels, Practitioner, Graduate and Expert. Each of them has 5 sub-levels. You start with Practitioner and you go up and up and up. It’s a good way to test your capabilities, to see how much you improved since you started(and I guarantee you WILL improve.). Tests are being held at the end of the term. If you pass, you get a shiny patch you sew to your pants and now you can show off that you’re a pro(or you’re on your way there ;)) The school is located on the 9th floor in the building, the room is quite big and there is plenty of fans, so you can literally chill out there. They have changing rooms, and toilets(no showers tho). Floor is covered with mats, so it hurts less when you fall… And you will fall. You will also learn HOWTO fall. It’s fun. Trust me. You can chose if you want to attend classes on Wednesday night or Thursday night — or if you’re fit enough, you can go for both! Wednesday and Thursday classes have the same curriculum, which is pretty useful when you can’t attend one of them. You can always catch up the other day. I believe the are also classes int he morning — three times a week for an hour. For these you have to commit to come every day, other case you might miss out quite a lot. There are also advanced classes on Mondays — once you pass your P2 test, you’re allowed to go for the ‘grown-up’ classes. Instructors are the best! Tim — the director and the main instructor can explain everything. Everything we learn at class has logic in it, and if you don’t see it first, don’t be afraid to ask questions! Instructors are there to help, and they are more than happy to do so! They have all the patience in the world, even to me, when I ask questions over and over and over again. They can make class fun. It’s a pleasure to be there. School also offers plenty of additional workshops(women’s only self defense, beach and bus(SOMUCHFUN!), defending multiple attackers, and many many more!) — they are all worth checking out. This school makes me feel much safer on the street and much more aware of the surroundings. I highly recommend to everybody who wants to learn how to protect themselves and wants to have a good workout while having plenty of fun!
