To start off, I’m Californian and I expect high quality Mexican food. Mexican is my favorite style of cooking, and coming from an area heavily influenced by Mexican cooking, it’s hard not to expect quality and cheap food. That’s really not the case for Guzman and Gomez. To be fair, all Mexican in Australia is horrible, so this is as good as it gets. The employees at Guzman and Gomez are great, they know how to whip out all the food in impressive speeds, but when you’re ordering there is little patience for customers. There’s a bunch of Guzman and Gomez popping up all over Brisbane(UQ, QUT, Toowong, City, South Bank, etc) and I expect that they will continue to spread all over Queensland and Australia. There usually lots of seating nearby, but this is generally a takeaway joint. Onto the food, ugh. Again, as a Californian, this is horrible Mexican food. As an Australian, it’s the best you’ll get in Brisbane. Compared to the size and price you can get in America, it’s expensive and small here. You can get a burrito for about 12 dollars but it’s quite small in my opinion and two may be necessary if you’re quite hungry. I always get the not spicy chicken burrito with guac(2.00 extra). Positive of G&G, they often have free burrito events when a new location opens up, but expect crazy lines. Also, 5 dollars on cinco de mayo so yay! To be honest, I’d never pay full price for their food, but I just have higher expectations. I’m sure as an Australian though, it’s definitely worth the price and quality.

As a native Californian, Mexican food is staple food, but now that I live in Japan my really only chance to eat it is when I travel. Go to Guzman y Gomez. You won’t be disappointed. I was greeted with«Hola» and from there it got even better. I had the burrito for 11.50AUD, which is considered cheap here(don’t blame the establishment on what a single $ means). I will return again, perhaps twice more, before I leave Brisbane.

Guzman is Guzman is Guzman. You know what you’re getting here, and it isn’t bad. It doesn’t quite have the full menu, but you get the staples. This is a foodcourt Guzman, so no dedicated seating, it might be a bit busy lunchtime during the week, but beyond that, no worries. And the refurbished food court is pretty swish. Staff as always, are lovely.

Mexican food is still a relatively new thing in Australia. Sure we’ve had Mexican food for years, but we’re only just catching on to the Mexican food court stands that you see all through out North America. The first time I tried Guzman I was visiting Brisbane from Vancouver. A friend who was keen to show me all of these wonderful new Mexican places, took me to Guzman. That night I had the fish tacos and I’ll be honest. I thought oh my god… Australians should cease trying to cook Mexican food and stick with what they know. Fast forward a year and I’m living in Australia and one of my co-workers suggests Guzman for lunch. I reluctantly agreed and ordered a spicy chicken burrito. Boy am I glad I did! I am now well and truly on the Brisbane Mexican train. The chicken is spicy– but not in a «I’m going to make your eyes water» way and the veggies are fresh. Guzman’s is always quick and delicious and I definitely recommend the spicy chicken. I’ve also recently graduated from eating a burrito to eating a burrito bowl and that is just as enjoyable!

Great food for takeaway. Mediocre service. Busy atmosphere. Good pricing. Quite a wait for takeaway food.

Round 2 at GyG last week and I left just as satisfied as I had the first time around. But… Next time I have to order the smaller size. I couldn’t finish it. Again.

If you work in the city, and you are looking for a quick and tasty Mexican fix, Guzman Y Gomez has you covered. Its well price, quickly prepared, and tasty as hell. I am not saying its high end, but damn, you get the spice for your buck. Its great. My work friends and I have all become hooked on it. Plus all the sauces and extras for free are great. You will not need any hesitation to try their nachos or burritos.

I’m an A-grade virgin(if there is such a thing!) when it comes to Mexican food. Thinking about it now remembering my trip to Guzman Y Gomez, I have to work on rectifying that actually. Before Guzman Y Gomez, the only Mexican that I have ever had(and I am literally kicking myself while writing this!) is Taco Truck, which is actually quite awesome… Anyway, as soon as I walked past Guzman Y Gomez, my mind was made up. I had to have lunch there. I was sort of excited about it actually. So we walked in a queued and all of a sudden it came to me — Hang on. Mexican Food is spicy, right? Oh oh. Kevin and Spicy DONOT mix!.. Turn around and walk away mate. before it’s too late. Non non. I want Mexican. I’m gonna be ok! So I got to the line and was greeted with a warm Hola by the waitress. Awesome. I went for the Chicken Guerrero Burrito(You promise it’s not spicy yeah?!), which got to me pretty quickly and it was brilliant! — Love it! Love it! Love it! I also had a mandarin Jarrito — I don’t know but I just thought it felt Mexican… I had to return and try the Barramundi Burrito before I left Brissie and so I did. Ay, Caramba!!! Loved it again. & of course I had another Jarrito because. well you know why.

Mexican and I have never gotten along. We’ve tried, many times but this spice adverse lady is always rushing for something to cool her mouth after attempting again to make nice with Mexican. There was a fair amount of hesitation as we walked into the line awaiting us at the new Guzman Y Gomez in the Wintergarden complex.(PS. I’m talking so new the tiles are still shining and the lines are out the door new). Hesitation at the mexican I’d once again be unable to finish and hesitation at the line. I hate waiting. I’m impatient. Call it the one Gen Y trait I carry. Don’t judge! Surprisingly the line moved at lightening speed as I mentioned to the people I was dining with, «I wonder how many burritos they serve a day?» and wam, bam the party in my mouth when I took the first bite of my Barramundi Burrito(add guac, hold the salsa please). I know we Aussies get flack for not knowing real Mexican, and they’re right. The mexican here is usually not as good as the real deal but Guzman Y Gomez might be the closest thing I’ve had on Australian shores.
