We booked Charlie’s Diner on Brighton Road for a special occasion & it didn’t disappoint in anyway.(Apart from the unfriendly male staff member who booked us in prior to entry — previously we have had really friendly book in staff?) Our table was clean & the bottomless«self serve» soft drink glasses you get were a hit with the younger members. All of the food you can choose from(1 large buffet centre &3 smaller ones) is amazing & so well presented & labeled. Most of the food is healthy, non fat(except the delicious deserts) choices of many different varieties. It’s so hard to stop at 2 – 3 plate fills but given the plate sizes are medium you can make an exception? There is also a kids playroom with claw machines, pin ball machines etc plus we were lucky on the night that they had free children’s face painting. Everyone, without an exception loved the food, the cleanliness & the general atmosphere. Highly recommended…

This has to be one of the worst places to eat in adelaide. The food is just absolutly disgusting and its more of a soup kitchen than anything. Most patrons seemed to be homeless and some of the smells coming from most of the diners made us sick. Some of them dug their hands into the food and tasted before dishing it out on their plates. Yuk yuk yuk Yikes! Stay away

Charlie’s Diner is your typical all you can eat establishment. An array of different curries, Chinese food, pasta, pizza, roast, vegetables, icecream, salads, bread, spring rolls, etc mean that there is something for everyone at a decent cost. It is set up in a very similar way to a tavern and resembles a lowbrow pub which suits the eating establishment theme. The food quality is what you would kind of expect for all you can eat — satisfactory at best however overall it is palatable. Beyond the food, they have soft drink machines and arcade games, however the floor is noticeably sticky. Staff are generally nice but the establishment can be quite loud from time to time. Overall, if you are hungry and need a quick meal, the range here is good and the price is alright. Don’t expect the best service or the best damn pizza ever but do expect to feel somewhat satisfied. The potato and pasta salads are also good(would recommend trying — not brilliant but still good).

Back in the mid nineties, before Jamie Oliver introduced us to lettuces other than the iceberg, everyone’s parents used to take them to Sizzler’s and the dine-in Pizza Hut. Or the tropical themed(i.e. mildly offensive Polynesian-style novelty décor) ‘Smorgys’. Endless ‘salad bars’ full of pasta in mayonnaise and soggy coleslaw. Sweaty roast beef in bain maries. ‘Frog in a pond’ jelly. More garlic bread than anyone thought possible. Little tin jars of powdered parmesan cheese. In retrospect I’m kind of horrified, but at the time it seemed fine to pay a nominal flat fee and eat endless plates of over-cooked, over-processed smörgåsbord delights. This hallowed time in our eating history lives on in the form of RSL bistros on the Northern NSW coast. Oh, and Charlie’s Diner. For fifteen bucks a head you can get all you want in defrosted then fried seafood or creamy potato salad. I came here once on a sort of masochistic binge-eating expedition with a group of housemates. The only way we could get through it was by blazing up in the car beforehand. So once you’re blazed, things are little easier. Don’t load up on carbs too early. Try a little of everything then get big plates of your faves. Don’t eat anything you can’t identify. Get into dessert. The rhubarb crumble and poached fruits are actually quite good.

They’ve obviously got more than one chef and it depends on what night of the week you go there, as the quality of the food will vary dramatically. The first time ever we went there was quite a while ago, the food was great and we even had to line up to get in. We’ve been there several times since and had reasonably good experiences and will no lining up but the last time we went it was very ordinary. And so the downward spiral begins. The service was good and the place was kept clean but the food, namely the roasts, pizza, spring rolls, etc basically all the food which needed to be kept warm was dried out. Perhaps it was over cooked to start with or the bain maries were kept at a constantly high temperature or just sat there for too long exposed to the elements. Smorgasbords are great value for money if you’re a big eater, large groups are catered for as there’s lots of room but the quality of the food needs to be good enough to eat. I hate to think of the hygiene side of things too! And I have to mention it’s a cold place in winter as it’s so open with no cosy feel to it at all. Summer it’s a better environment but again the food is a let down now compared to when it first opened its doors.

Smörgåsbord rules. Dried up roast, limp salads, overboiled veges, cold pizza and molten ice cream, but all with bottomless drinks.
