Piney Lakes Reserve is one of the best parks in Perth. Easy parking, no large crowds and lots of space make this the ideal place to visit whether you are young or old. The reserve covers approximately 67 hectares. Within this space is a sensory playground for the children, barbecue facilities, large open spaces and an amazing path which you can follow, either on foot, bicycle, scooter or roller blades. There is also a boardwalk in the wetlands area, which is best followed on foot only, as the path can get a bit rough and uneven. The Environmental Education Centre is located on the Leach Highway side of the reserve. Staff will show visitors around the centre and provide information regarding sustainability, environmental advice, and information regarding the flora and fauna at Piney Lakes. Although the reserve is surrounded by two very busy streets, when walking around the paths, there is nothing but peace and quiet. It is hard to believe you are right in the middle of the suburbs. You can stay at Piney Lakes for hours and the kids will love it. You can pack a picnic or cook your food on the barbecue. Make sure you bring either a cricket set or some sort of ball as well, as there is a lot of open grass space. During the warmer months, you do have to be careful of snakes, not that they are slithering around everywhere, but I have seen one before. There are also a lot of other creatures, some only come out at night though. Keep an eye out for the sculptures as well.
