I ordered a beetroot and feta salad today and it came with two slices of tinned beetroot. Pathetic!

Gusto. I think this must be officially the coolest place to buy coffee in Bondi in the a.m. A perfect position just off Campbell Parade manes you can literally emerge from the surf and have coffee in hand in a matter of minutes… depending on how long the wait is of course. This is my one issue with this joint. Depending on who’s baristering, it can honestly feel like forever waiting for your morning grind to land in hand. No matter when you rock up, the tiny café space is always bustling, and punters are either inside at bar height tables, or spilling outside on to the footpath. The breakfast rolls with bacon or smoked salmon, poached egg and hollandaise are a chi chi version of the tried and tested Aussie fave, and the granola could be worthy of a Guiness world record for its serious crunch. Drown the stuff in dairy and it’ll still stay crunchy as. A great little vibe to imbibe when you’re out and about solo, particularly on a weekday morning when the place isn’t totally feral with crowds.

I just had an odd chicken salad at Gusto in Bondi. It wasn’t really that odd and I don’t mean to be negative as there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, it just was not to my taste. It was a very healthy salad(as I suppose salad should be), Chicken with greens, carrot and apple. I think it was the apple, which rubbed me up the wrong way. I have never been much of a fan of apple in salads(not so much into the Waldorf type salads), I love apples, but apple and chicken doesn’t rally work for me. It was fresh and tasty otherwise though. Also the coffee at gusto is excellent, strong and flavoursome, that I would definitely go back for.

Now Gusto knows their shit. Great coffee, tops service, cute tattooed barista, simple wholesome food… I’m a fan. As with many of Bondi Beach’s busy scenes, this buzzing café has a system in place: to sit in, go inside and order from the counter where you can see the menu and delicious foods on offer. Take-away orders go straight to the Barista from the front window. It works a treat and means that busy or not, you are never left feeling unacknowledged(the golden rule of hospitality!) Gusto’s food is classic home-cooking style, with the most amazing berry muffins baked daily, and their home-made granola is to. die. for. Minimal pavement seating is a great place to enjoy the beachside hustle and bustle that epitomises Bondi life.

This thriving café is a great place to unwind and watch Bondi bustle along. That’s if you are lucky enough to snag a seat in this always busy café. Renowned by the locals, many of which claim it’s the bst coffee in Sydney. I’m not so sure but it is VERY good. Gusto also offers some delicious and rather large sandwiches — I can never go past the roasted vegetables — and some fabulous sweet things, try the banana bread — yum! This tiny café is adored by the locals and you won’t be disappointed. If you can’t get a seat then simply order your coffee and food to go, cross the road and park yourself on the grass at Bondi Beach… it’s a hard life!

Pull up a milk crate and soak up the rays all day long at Gusto. This constantly busy café is as much about sitting down with a good meal as it is about admiring the beautiful people strolling up and down Hall Street. Punters take to the breakfast bar for a laid back morning with the paper, or sprawl out onto the sidewalk teetering on little wooden stools. Sip away on the café’s own custom coffee bean blend that’s made quite the name for this little joint over the years, and justifiably so. Food wise, the house-made granola is a sweet start to the day, served with seasonal fruit compote(often rhubarb based) atop a pile of thick, rich yoghurt. If savouries are your thing, the toasted chorizo panini with rocket and feta is another good choice.

It’s small but it has a big reputation amongst the locals. Chilled atmosphere, in the heart of the beach, Gusto Espresso Bar is one heck of a place to pop by for a coffee. You won’t be disappointed. The baristas are top notch and many of my coffee loving friends are on such good terms with them that there’s always a brief chat as we walk past. That’s a good way to judge a coffee place in Bondi, if the barista is always chatting to someone then you know their coffee is loved. Us Bondi folk tend to fall a little bit in love with whoever brews our beans. It’s a great place to grab a latte and a muffin from and then stroll down to the beach and take it all in while you sip your warm goodness.

When it comes to coffee, Sydneysiders are snobs. We want, expect and require the best. Yes we are spoilt — but frankly I don’t care. Coffee is one of our luxurys and we demand excellence. It’s for this reason, Sydneysiders are fairly cautious about recommending coffee, because to some degree your reputation is at stake. That said, I’m taking the plunge(intended) and going to recommend my favourite Bondi coffee — Gusto. This tiny little coffee place on Hall street with its makeshift tables and simplistic décor makes the most wonderful coffee. Enjoy sitting outside watching the locals or grab a cuppa on the way to the beach — either way you will be pleased with you caffeinated beverage. Everytime I’m at Gusto I bump into someone I know — it’s the locals coffee place — so if you want to get to know some of the characters of Bondi — it’s worthwhile stopping here for a drink.
