Pencilmark Lane is a family-​owned and –operated specialty children’s retail store located at 3 Doveton Street North, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.

Our focus is well-​designed, Australian-​made and hand-​crafted clothing, accessories, toys, gifts, keepsakes, décor and homewares for babies and children aged newborn to eight.

We also stock a wonderful range of locally-​produced and genuinely eco-​friendly stationery, cards, wrap and party goods.

We believe in form following function, which means — despite having a distinctly heirloom /​vintage /​retro feel — the kids’ products we sell are meant to be played in or with, not stored in a wardrobe for ‘good’ or kept high on a shelf for ‘later’.

We value quality over quantity, have faith in fair trade and uphold the notion that good design — as opposed to ‘designer goods’ — shouldn’t cost the Earth.

We celebrate creativity, support sustainability and wholeheartedly endorse having a bit of good, old-​fashioned fun.

History

Established in 2011.

Established in 2011, Pencilmark Lane came about when owner Madeleine grew frustrated with traipsing back to Melbourne to buy presents for her rapidly reproducing, design-​savvy, eco-​conscious, well-​travelled circle of creatively like-​minded friends and their ever-​increasing hoards of offspring.

Business Owner

Hailing from Melbourne, Madeleine has extensive experience in the design, retail and education sectors. Although she originally made the move to regional Victoria to pursue a career in teaching and restore one of Ballarat’s glorious old Victorian-​era homes, she found a niche with Pencilmark Lane and stuck with it, has since had a little boy and couldn’t be happier. Needless to say, renovating the house is still a work in progress…
