Rerun has dwindled a bit since the past unfortunately. Value for money is something you will not find here, prices are inflated in comparison to many other stores around Adelaide. The amount of new vinyl records has tripled in size which is great if you chase that kind of stuff(i.e. a lot of reissued originals). The photography guy never seems to be present, which also makes things difficult if you are interested in any of that kind of stuff. If you’re around, maybe call in, but I wouldn’t make an effort to get here.

I love coming to this shop. The vinyl records, the great tunes and the old photographs and cameras are certainly a nostalgic trip, and there are so many gems you can dig up whilst rummaging through the extensive collection of items here. John runs the store, and is one of the coolest store owners I’ve had the privilege of meeting. Each time I come in he asks what I’m looking for, and then will immediately start playing similar-sounding artists on the turntable based on my answer. His extensive knowledge doesn’t end at records — he has a lot of stories to tell on artists, on music, on drugs, on life in general. You can always expect an entertaining conversation upon setting foot in this store. His record collection is also wide and diverse, and there are some real gems hidden in the crates if you care to take your time looking through them. The other chap that runs the photography side of the store is always a great conversationalist, and is always telling the stories behind the old photographs of Adelaide and the city’s beginnings. The collection of vintage cameras is impressive, and you can pick up some pretty cool equipment for a bargain.

I don’t know the first thing about records. So when I walked into the shop I had no idea where to start and aimlessly started walking around until the lovely owner jumped up and came to my assistance. After a short exchange, with me pretending to have some idea what on earth I wanted, I walked out of the shop with a record player and a vinyl. Dad’s Christmas present had successfully been bought the day before the event. This shop has some of the best customer service in Adelaide. The owner is willing to do whatever to help you; play you a range of vinyls, suggest music and give you a good deal when you buy a bit more. If you do want to get a better deal, make sure you bring cash with you. Although I’m not a vinyl expert I know that the shop has one of the best record ranges in Adelaide. There is everything from the soundtrack to Rocky Horror to the latest Taylor Swift album, which the man jokingly suggested I should purchase. These also vary greatly in price, older ones may be as little as $ 10 but you could pay up to $ 60 for newer and more popular one. They also have a number of record players available. Now these are not cheap, the one I purchased was one of the cheapest and I paid $ 80. However, this shop is really one of your only options unless you feel like searching around through Adelaide’s vintage and op-shops. As you’re not really a hipster if you don’t have a camera, Rerun also sells a large range of cameras. Almost all of them are second-hand, generally quirkier, cameras. They have polaroids, lomos, fisheyes and more. Like everything else in the store they range in price dramatically, so I would suggest having a chat to the guy working there to help you pick out what would best suit you.

There has been a recent emerging trend lately here in Adelaide. There’s been a sudden increase in interest in photography. If you are not a photographer yourself, you know quite a few other friends that are into it. And while we all support our«starving photographer» friends, ‘Vintage Photographics’(you have to enter Rerun records to actually see there are two shops in one!) provides huge photo frames, and old school German cameras with very popular brown leather cases. The owner of this tiny shop has a beautiful gallery of photos of streets of older Adelaide for the customer. You learn that the streets of Adelaide have dramatically changed in the past century. People wore different clothes and drove very different classic cars, yet they look completely alive and busy in every photo. After about only 15 minutes inside this shop, I immediately felt absolutely inspired myself(it could have been the countless cameras staring right at me) and I bravely took photos with total confidence of two new strangers who approached me about selling their Blackberry phone. It was when they started to walk away that I knew it was time to move on. I thoroughly enjoyed the flashback of Adelaide, and I did truly enjoy the fact that while I was there, other people in Adelaide are into photography as well, not just lonely old me. Buildings, Adelaide locals walking around old Russell Street, and the way the roads looked back then… it looked so raw, it was real and organic. This was Adelaide. What a world we live in now compared to back then. It made me feel grateful of the so many things we fortunately have today. Better cars, better clothes, more population. The only criticism I have of this store is the size, the hidden hard-to-find location(even with the help of Google Map), and the price tag of the photo frames(the most expensive one was $ 300!). I didn’t feel like walking away with anything that I badly wanted to take home after my visit. I didn’t check out the records section, because I was more interested in doing a different review solely on ‘Vintage Photographics’. However, my good friend, who is a regular visitor of ‘Rerun Records’, said if you need the old classic artists like the Beatles, this is the place to go to. Her Nonetheless, it did provoke me to say a lot more about life(think about more serious things) in my review, rather than what I purchased. what I loved most about this tiny store was that it was completely designed to provide old cameras to photographers who love the feel of the old school. It goes to show how just one photo taken in one split second can describe a thousand words, especially here in fast-changing Adelaide. Way to go Vintage Photography — thank you for reminding an aspiring journalist like me that my art/career can make a difference to the audience, and will be locked forever in history no matter how much time has past. I may get my many critics that it should’ve looked this way instead, but you cannot take away that moment in time.

The only thing as fantastic as this shop is the guy who runs it. Always up for a chat, you can get onto any topic with him while he’s googling on his laptop and you’re leaning on the front counter. He’s also a veritable fountain of musical knowledge(how could he NOT be?) and will happily share it with you or help you find something obscure you’re after. I have a good friend who collects records, and we play a game called«Find the most ridiculous record then play it on repeat.» While mostly I shop at garage sales, I like knowing this place is here when I have something specific in mind. Also, the old cameras at the back of the store are like a cluttered museum. Gorgeous to look at, as well as the old photography on the walls. I’ve been so tempted to buy an old Nikon lens just to see what the pictures are like from my camera, but i can’t afford these ones as much as I can’t afford new lenses! The atmosphere of this place is so fantastic, it sucks you in even if you resist its charm.

Rerun Records is definitely worth seeking out if you’re into vintage records and vintage style cameras. I personally do not own a record player, but I love the look of records, and one day I want to become a collector, so knowing that a place like this exists makes me very happy. There were so many albums that I would have purchased if I could have. What I do have is an interest in photography, so looking at the beautiful old Nikon’s and Canon’s was awesome. They also had a collection of old photographs from the 50s etc, which were utterly beautiful.

Rerun Records is where you can buy vintage records and sell them if you have a collection in good condition you wish to part with. They have an extensive range of records, compact discs and other music memorabilia like video, books and posters. There’s also a very interesting collection of vintage cameras for sale and a few other obscure items around the store run by the very knowledgeable John Saviour who knows his stock pretty well. So if you happen to be looking for something in particular and he is behind the counter you are best just to ask, unless of course you have all day to browse because believe me this is one of those stores where you can browse all day and be wondering how to justify purchasing a dozen vinyl records when you don’t even have an old school record player as I do! This shop used to be part of a larger store hidden in a back alley over the other side of Pultney Street at the East end of the Renaissance Arcade until it moved here into the actual Shop 35 Renaissance Arcade if you haven’t noticed yet. I know a lot of DJ’s who spin records around town come here to keep their collections interesting — there are plenty of genres to go through and as is always the way you can stumble upon some amazing stuff when you were looking for one thing, you end up finding another. Great shop in the tradition of finding unexpected gems.
