Well crud, my review was not saved so here is the short version.
Haigh’s is not all that great. If you compare it to Swiss chocolate, Dutch chocolate, Belgian chocolate, German… it is fair.
Some is good but not really superior, for what it apparently costs.
But I do believe South Australians are loyal to the place and proud of it.
I’ve had a lot of chocolate in my day… and have the dental fillings to prove it! Just had to weigh in as a true chocoholic, here…

I guess the hype associated with this chocolatier has to do more with the strong association with Adelaide’s history than believing these chocolates are worth their mettle.
Sure there is a rainbow of sizes, shapes, fillings, adornments, etc but they are quite expensive.
They do however — take pride in the source of their prime material (as informed by another Unilocaler!) aiming for sustainable cocoa. Commendable!
Still, as a true meaning of a Unilocal 2-star… «Meh, I’ve experienced better» If you are not emotionally linked to this place invest the same amount of money on local world-class wines :)

If I pop in to town and am even somewhat in the vicinity of this Haigh’s store, and of course providing I have a dollar or two, there is literally not much that will stop me from stopping by.
Haigh’s is a name that has been around for years, and rightly so, they make some of the best chocolate that money can buy.
This store is well set out, plenty of space and staff who simply treat you as if you are the single most important person that has walked through their doors today, I like that, I like that a lot!
All up, if you want a chocolate fix in town, scores ahead of the 3 dollar block that you can buy from your local supermarket, stop in to this Haigh’s store. The look and most importantly taste of chocolate leaps to another level after you’ve indulged in chocolate from here, you’ll count the days until you can return.

For almost 100 years Haigh’s has been a badge very firmly tacked onto South Australia breast.
For all those who like chocolate or chocolate based products, Haigh’s is definitely a place to frequent.
Whether you’re buying a gift box of various chocolates, or a large block to enjoy for yourself, there’s something for everyone at Haigh’s!
I never knew this Haigh’s store was here for years. Then again Adelaide Arcade always eluded me for some unknown reason.

I would definitely rate the Grenfell Haighs as better than the well trodden Rundle Mall store in terms of classiness and glamour. Of course it offers the same amazing chocolatey products, but because it is less crowded the staff can offer you more of their time, especially during this busy holiday season.
I have many favourites throughout the Haighs range. The different kinds of chocolate covered nuts are really good, especially the hazelnuts. I also really like that there is a range of tourist products that foreigners can take across all four corners of the globe. These change over the years but I especially like the chocolate barrumundi and the little wallaby and bilby’s they make at Easter.
The range is not cheap, but for a quality South Australian product I guess you can say it is reasonable. Look for the little bars you can get in the display cabinets, they are a little cheaper and just a couple of those wrapped in a box makes for a really great present.

Chocolate is, at any time, a good thing. It can be melted, poured over body parts and even eated if that is how you swing! There is, however, a world of difference between your $ 3 a block, movie session choc and top class, all your taste buds giving you a high five, individually packaged amazingness! Haighs is most definately the latter!
Although there are a number of stores around (all good of course), I prefer the store on the corner of Adelaide Arcade on Grenfil Street. The store itself screams class, and in my opinion makes the choccie frogs taste all the sweeter!
It aint cheap though, so don’t expect to come out with a shopping bag full of ‘regret it in the morning’ for a couple of gold coins! Like good cheese though, top class Chocolate is worth the expense… especially when you eat it.
