With a sharp eye and a creative mind, the Art Gallery of South Australia is a welcoming friend with an ever-changing appearance. Its galleries reflect our lives from the rich and complex history of Australian art in the Elder Wing, to the vibrancy of Asian and Islamic art, to big ideas in the Melrose Wing which offers intriguing ways of looking at European art history.
History
Established in 1881.
Declared open on 18 June 1881 by His Royal Highness Prince Albert, the ‘National Gallery of South Australia’, as it was known at the time, was originally housed in two rooms of what is now the Mortlock Library.
Although the Gallery led a rather nomadic existence before settling down on its present site in 1900, it was, none the less, the fourth public gallery to be established by an Australian colony, a remarkable achievement only forty-five years after the commencement of European settlement in South Australia.
